Wet Paint

Welcome. As you can see, the Laura Brophy Photography blog is under construction. Please pardon the dust, the paint, and all the other loose ends. The new blog that I launched in February has never felt quite right. In upgrading to the latest version of WordPress in an attempt to solve some difficulties I was having with uploading images, I decided to take a look at the whole blog. What I want to share with you are images... my favorites from work with clients, my travels, and my family and friends. And I want them big and beautiful. I need to declutter and refocus. It is my hope that this new template will accomplish that. While I will not be able to reload all photos in the larger format, I will over the coming days go back over the most recent posts and reload photos to give you a better feel for what I have been up to and to kick off this blog redesign the right way. I'll also be customizing the background and a fun new flash masthead, so stay tuned.

Regards,

Laura

Miss Maya {& Mom}

I had the great pleasure of photographing Maya in celebration of her 3rd birthday.  Maya is the little girl with whom I was featured in an April 2007 article in the New York Times on start-up photography businesses.

For this session, we ventured over to Sonnenberg Gardens, one of my very favorite places to photograph, just a mile from my home studio.  The last shot (and several others) were taken in the Rock Garden, a magical place tucked away in the trees.  Kids always enjoy exploring this area.  For that last shot, Maya had run far ahead of us and was loving following the windy path through rocks, trees and wildflowers.  Just as she ran across the rock bridge, I called her and she stopped for all of 3 seconds…just long enough.

Happy 4th!

Here’s a sidewalk warm-up to the big fireworks, courtesy of the Palumbo crew next door.  I’m still debating whether or not to venture down to the lake for the festivities.  I’m not sure I’m up for the noise and crowds, and we have to hit the road early for a swim meet in Buffalo.  I know…I am sounding like an old fart.  I’m feeling like one.

Fun Family

For my first post in the new format, I’m backtracking a bit to May and a wonderful family session I did in Highland Park, one of my favorite spots in Rochester. These kids were so much fun, and kept me hopping as we explored the park on a beautiful Spring day.

Congrats Nora!

And check out this Animoto video from her party:

My Girl

In getting ready for last night’s session, I needed to do a lighting test.  The humans were uncooperative, but sweet Stella agreed to pose for me.  She has now been with us for three months, and it’s amazing how much she has grown.  She has all the makings of a great dog, but she’s in those crazy early teen years now and we never quite know what we’re going to get from her.

You also get a sense here of some of the potential of the white floor in the studio.  It needs another couple of coats of paint and the finish molding, but we’re getting close to having the space complete. I’m looking forward to sharing photos here.

Classic Session with Caitlin

Finally, beautiful sunny skies and a rainless session.  I had a great time with Caitlin on Saturday morning as we ventured out to some of my favorite spots, including the pond at my parent’s house.  As you can see here, Caitlin showed tremendous versatility, and I had fun processing her preview — from the classic beauty of the violin to the edginess of the railroad tracks.  We caught it all.  I can’t wait to process the rest of the session.

Introducing Dede

Have I mentioned rain?  That seems to be the theme for 2009 sessions.  Dede’s beauty, style and grace broke right through it though, and we had a great session.

I have been thinking about how lucky I am to have the beautiful architecture of the Court House, railroad tracks, graffiti, brick alleys, and beautiful gardens all a quick walk from the studio.  I especially enjoyed working with Dede on the tracks.

I’ve started adding the Class of 2009 into the galleries and pages of the Senior Site.  I’m loving these fresh faces.

A quick note and update on the Graduation Sale: Tomorrow is the last day to take advantage of the offer for a reduced July session fee or to prepay for a Classic Collection and eliminate the session fee altogether.  This has been a very popular offer, and July is continuing to fill in quickly.  Please call today or tomorrow if you want to lock in these special prices.

At the Stable with Aryn

I try to use the blog to share a sneak peak with clients after a session and before their gallery goes live.

It’s a thrill to have senior season back in full gear.  I very much enjoy having the opportunity to meet all these great kids.

Aryn invited me to the farm in Bloomfield, and I had a wonderful time with her and her Arabian horse.  It had been a long time since I had been in a stable, and it brought back sweet memories of Nora’s riding days up in Phelps.  This was one of my three outdoor sessions over the last week with RAIN.  Lots of rain.  We used the cover of the barn and trees to continue on despite the cold rain.

This first shot is one I had in my head the moment Aryn called requesting a session with her horse.  I’m not sure where, but it’s going in the new studio suite somewhere for everyone to enjoy.

Summer Schedule & Senior Graduation Sale

June is now totally booked, and July is filling up quickly. The August schedule book will open on July 1, with August availability limited to 15 sessions. Please call soon to guarantee availability and your desired date.

In celebration of my daughter’s upcoming graduation from Canandaigua Academy, I’m offering a Graduation Sale on sessions scheduled THIS WEEK ONLY.  July Signature sessions scheduled between now and midnight on June 23 qualify for $25 off the session fee (regularly $125). As an alternative, the session fee will be waived altogether for seniors who pre-purchase a Senior Collection (starting at $500) when booking. Call 585.455.5335 to schedule, and have a credit card handy to reserve your spot.

Finally, because I hate posts without photos, I give you the beautiful Sadie from Finland, taken at the Senior Ball earlier this month.

Kicking Off the Class of 2009

It is my pleasure to introduce Abby, the first of the Class of 2009.  I loved working with her, and I love her images.  And her session is proof that rain isn’t all bad.  In fact, it brought beautiful light and forced us to get creative with locations and poses, with great results.
